Buddy
Davis may just qualify as a founding father when it comes to building
Carolina hulls ready to bust through the turbulent waters often
associated with North Carolina's Outer Banks. The new Buddy Davis 58 appears
ready to honor her pedigree. Naval architect Don Blount and Buddy
Davis collaborated on the new build. Though she's 1 ½ feet
shorter than the 61 she replaces, the 58 offers improved performance
and accommodations.
Buddy Davis
builds the boats with a solid fiberglass bottom for additional strength.
Divinycell coring is used on the topsides form the waterline up,
enduring the Buddy Davis is strong and light. This same mantra is reflected
in the interior. Main interior bulkheads are constructed with lightweight
Nydacore, and the saloon deck, forward cabin deck and cockpit deck
are reinforced with vacuum-bagged Nydacore.
The
58's deep, narrow entry forward allows the hull to punch through
heavy head seas without pounding. The flat chines and convex surfaces
aft should help get her out of the hole with a reasonable amount
of horsepower. Standard power is a pair of 1,400 hp Caterpillar
3412E diesels, which, according to the builder, will deliver speeds
of 36 to 37 knots and a typical cruising speed of 30 knots fully
loaded. Tow interior plans are available, and an array of finishes
and decor packages are offered.
